Geography of the Moon

As the Moon’s rotation is locked to its orbit around the Earth (thanks to the tidal forces from the Earth, which are several times greater than the tidal forces from the Moon on the Earth), we only ever see the inner side of the Moon from the surface of the Earth. This is known as the Lunar Nearside, and we have been able to see it since humanity itself first looked up at the heavens.

The other side of the Moon, the Lunar Farside, remained a mystery to us until we developed the ability to send out space probes. It was first photographed by the Soviet unmanned probe Luna 3 in 1959. The photos sent back were grainy and poor quality, but they showed the first sights of the far side of the Moon[17].
